With the cold and all the recent snow it is a certainly a time of year in which we all can become stressed out or just have the desire to withdraw and hide out under a blanket. Sports are in the heart of their seasons, schools have limited breaks and high demands, and work just becomes a grind. These fact can lead to an increased time of reduced motivation, boredom, and just feelings of being stuck. In other words, we can just feel like we are in a rut.

When we are in a rut we are at risk to spiral mentally, be in a bad mood, and even become less productive as a person. It can impact our relationships with other people. and simply our day to day functioning and happiness. It is important to recognize this is happening to our mindset so we can catch it and stop to cycle. How do we do that? Below are some ideas on what to do in no particular order.

  1. You have to recognize the triggers and patterns that start this spiral. What situations are you being placed in that lead you to pull away or feel stuck?

  2. Ask yourself what can you control in the situation. We tend to overlook and just complain versus taking an active, problem solving approach.

  3. Go back to basics and keep things simple. There are always things in life that we find as our true place of comfort. Sometimes it is okay to go back to that place to kick start our rebound and break the rut cycle. Make small realistic goals for yourself.

  4. At the same time, sometimes it is good to mix it up and try something new. Go somewhere you have been wanting to go to, try a new activity, or simply get out of the house - brave the cold.

  5. Social support is one of most important things in life to manage everything stress related. Who can you be with today?

  6. Complaining can be a stress release, but a short lived one. Do not over rely on just talking negatively about everything around you as negativity just fuels more negativity.

  7. Be active, exercise, meditate, journal, read a book.

  8. Ask yourself honestly if you are making a bigger deal out of something that is worth the amount of mental energy you are giving it. I would bet you put a lot more mental energy into things than it warrant. Time to shift that way of thinking.

  9. If you can control the situation, problem solve and why are you worried? If you can't control it why are you worried? Are your goals realistic?

  10. Be kind to yourself. in the end you are human and it isn't worth it to beat yourself up. Find your strengths and put the better parts of yourself out there.
